My Vent...

Nobody asked, but, if I were to write the vent...

Today we had a comment about how it was OK for John McCain to joke about bombing Iran, but not OK for Harry Reid to state that we have lost the war in Iraq. Writer, get a clue; the Bush War was lost long ago. And, it is not OK to joke about killing civilians. Do you think bombs and mortars only kill the bad guys? Get a life...

There was a note about the DUI that spelled the end of a St. George cop's career expressing shock that the newspaper ran the story. That saddens me. We have no favorites here, we pull no punches and we don't protect anybody...

There's a great event at Vernon Worthen Park today as our sister newspaper, El Sol, hosts a fiesta. Good food, good music, good art and a chance for the community to connect. The Council on Illegal Immigration ought to drop by to try to get to know some of its new neighbors. Maybe then they'll realize we are all very much the same, despite our language or skin color...

Why is it that mainstream media is pushing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as the next great thing? Simple, in our corporate world, based solely on money and not soul, they are the largest fundraisers in the Democratic Party. I am less likely to vote for the candidate who raised the most money simply because I don't want somebody in office who carries that much political debt. Raising money is great if you work for a non-profit organization. Raising money is something else entirely if you are a political candidate. Does money turn the wheel? You bet. Does money provide the kind of representation in politics that we all desire? No way...

Mega-congrats to the Washington County Search and Rescue Team for its heroic efforts to bring three men and their two dogs off Pine Valley Mountian the other day. I have some lingering questions about all that. I mean, when the weather started to turn, why didn't these guys turn around and hike out? Also, what about the claim that one of the three men was injured, yet when they came down from the mountian, they all refused medical services? Thank God none of the rescuers were injured...

First Lady needs welcoming committee at Zion

The honchos of the Republican Party have been dropping by our state with a lot more frequency as of late.

We had presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee; Dick Cheney will give a commencement address at Brigham Young University; and now we learn that First Lady Laura Bush plans to visit Zion National Park next week.

We're not sure if she'll be roughing it in a tent or staying in one of the beautiful tourist inns near the park, but, she's coming.

And, she probably needs a welcoming committee.

Now, I really like Laura. She seems to be about the only one in that bunch with any brains and we'll forgive her choice of a life partner because love is blind.

But, wouldn't it be nice if we could arrange for a welcoming committee of, say, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, Cindy Sheehan, the CodePink organization and others devoted to peace to greet her as she visits our beautiful park and, perhaps, engage in a little friendly conversation?

I mean, you can bet she won't have much company other than Secret Service agents. Her daughters won't be here, for sure. Not much action or many bars/clubs to hang out in. The First Family's version of Paris and Britney would, I'm sure, rather wait for mom in Las Vegas.

We really don't want Cheney to come down, either, because instead of the natural beauty, he'd probably be looking to turn Zion into Halliburtonland, with exciting rides on one side and mineral/oil exploration rigs on the other.

And, her husband? He's a flat-lander who would probably be most uncomfortable in the towering canyons.

So, I'm sure she could use some company.

So, let me extend a personal invitation to Rocky, Cindy and all the others who could enliven the First Lady's stay in Southern Utah.
