Go, Johnny, Go
I had the pleasure to speak today to the Washington County Utah Democrats, a group that drew a pretty phenomenal group of 150 people to their monthly luncheon.
I'd like to think being a co-conspirator in this endeavor to remove George Bush from the White House had something to do with it, but I would be flattering myself too much to honestly believe that.
Instead, I found some of the Bluest people I've ever encountered in the Reddest of the Red States of America.
And, I used the opportunity to throw my two cents in on this vital campaign for the White House and the 2008 election.
At the same time, I realized that the guy I want in the Oval Office is the same guy I wanted a couple of years ago -- John Edwards.
I am looking for a candidate with integrity, compassion, a willingness to work for us and the common sense to speak with us, not at us.
I'm looking for a candidate who understands the drastic need for health reform. I'm looking for a candidate with energy.
I'm looking for a candidate with courage, which means, sometimes, admitting that they have made mistakes in the past, such as Sen. Edwards' admission that his vote in favor of the Iraq War was wrong.
As a newspaper columnist and blogger, I don't find it comfortable to endorse somebody this early in the race.
But, I fear that Democrats the nation over are all too willing to settle and vote for Anybody But, instead of a candidate who has the wherewithal to actually put the party's platform to work.
I am not willing to settle for Anybody But.
There are some fine candidates out there and some not-so-fine candidates.
None resonates more soundly and wisely than Edwards.
Barack is an unknown quantity. Hillary is yesterday's news. Biden is too old-school. Richardson is a talent and I hope he would take a serious look at the possibility of being second on the Edwards ticket, which would be the best the Democrats have offered in decades.
So, in the immortal words of Chuck Berry, Go, Johnny, Go.
