SUU men's hoops thoughts
The T-Birds finished up their exhibition season with a win over Mesa State.
As is normal with teams this early in the season, there are promising possiblities with this team but also plenty of shortcomings needing improvement.
The T-Birds have commmitted 48 fouls in two games. It's obvious that won't fly when they face Division I competition. SUU also struggled from the foul line on Saturday, which is never a good sign.
However, this is obviously an unselfish team that will love playing together. Could it be that this team develops the chemistry of last year's squad — with added athleticism it didn't have before? That's an intriguing possibility.
I'll check back later this week with thoughts heading into the game against Utah.

I had to leave early mainly becasue the officials called junior high game. I officated this level of basketball from high school through Div I for nearly thirty years and I thought I should never criticize other officals. Expereinced officals know that the better the level of players the more you can let them play. These officals did NOT let them play at all, they control the pace which is not why they are out there. If they werent expereinced enough to do htis game, and over controlling the game is a sing of that, they shouldn't have been out there. It was very boring to say the least. SUU didnt help the matter when they didnt adjust which is the only thing they could have done in these circumstances.

That was one of the longest games I think I've ever attended and it did stall quite a bit.
The officials were balanced, with both teams committing about the same amount of fouls.
But they sure called EVERYTHING. I can see why you felt that way. I agree that at a certain point you have to let the players play the game.
Let's hope this isn't a season-long affair, but the T-Birds also have to play defense with their feet instead of their hands.

I agree with you RJ, it may have been fair for both sides but the officals "saw" too much. Any offical knows there are many things happening on every play but you have to use judgement and I thought that was lacking in this group of officals. You officate at the level of the players, thats what expereinced officals do if they are any good.
