Marriage makes the man
If marriage is as good for people as the experts say it is, Jeff Gordon was doing really well for himself on Friday afternoon at Phoenix International Raceway.
The newly-married (for the second time) Gordon grabbed the pole position for the Checker Auto Parts 500 on Friday. Not only was it Gordon's second of the season, but it was the 56th of his career.
It was the almost-perfect capper to the week.
Gordon married Belgian model Ingrid Vandebosch on Tuesday, then turned around Friday to do a lap of 26.773 seconds and speed of 134.464 mph around the flat one-mile oval at PIR.
With two races left in the season, Gordon is a longshot to win his fifth Nextel Cup championship, but it's all academic for him these days.
After the messy divorce from his first wife, Brooke (a former Miss Winston), it's good to see the man feeling good and complaining less.
Marriage will do that to a man, even those who go fast for a living.
